Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2013 goes Foodie Hosts a stimulating discussion on ‘Food Stories: Stirring Memories’ between Yasmin Alibhai Brown and Sujata Sen and Reba Som
Kolkata, 10th January, 2013: Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival 2013 cooked up a lively and stimulating panel discussion on ‘Food’ as cultural representation and as a bridge connecting different cultures and individuals. Yasmin Alibhai Brown, British journalist, telecaster and writer, who has extensively researched on the Food Connect, shared how food memories can transport us to times, people and cultures. She shared her personal experiences of covering different kind of food and culture in various countries and how she found that its all tied together. Sujata Sen and Reba Som spoke about Kolkata’s home grown cuisine - Bengali food – and highlighted interesting facts overall about Indian food as an ‘identity’ with its multi- cultural diaspora. The theme touched upon how food, the most crucial part of everyone’s life keeps an individual connected to his / her people and country through food memories no matter how far an individual is physically away from his country. Yasmin Alibhai-Brown is a Ugandan-born British journalist and author, who described herself as a "leftie liberal, anti-racist, feminist, Muslim, part-Pakistan. Currently a regular columnist for The Independent and the Evening Standard, she is a well-known commentator on issues relating to immigration, diversity and multiculturalism. Sujata Sen holds a Post Graduate Professional Diploma in Marketing from Chartered Institute of Marketing, UK. Currently holds the position as the Director East India at British Council. Dr. Reba Som is an academic, historian, writer and classical singer from India. She is the Director of Indian Council for Cultural Relations' Rabindranath Tagore Centre in Kolkata. Reba Som is also a trained singer of Rabindra Sangeet. About Apeejay Kolkata Literary Festival (AKLF) 2013: A Community initiative by the Apeejay Surrendra Group, the annual literary festival hosted since 2010 in Kolkata is the first international literary festival in Kolkata, a city celebrated for its intellectual depth and cultural heritage.
