TEACHING
1) Received “Student Teaching Award 2003-2004” from the Department of Medicine for
consistent excellence in medical student teaching.
2) Received “Best Teaching Faculty of the Year Award 2006-2007” from the Division of
Nephrology for consistent excellence in nephrology fellow’s teaching and mentorship.
3) Received “Best Teaching Faculty of the Year Award 2007-2008” from the Division of
Nephrology for consistent excellence in nephrology fellow’s teaching and mentorship.
1) Teaching nephrology fellows at the University of Miami the essentials and tools of
interventional nephrology. Created a rotation for interventional nephrology (renal ultrasonography, peritoneal dialysis catheter placement, endovascular procedures for dialysis access) whereby fellows are exposed to this important aspect of the care of patients with renal disease.
2) Training and certification (using the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional
Nephrology recommendations) of the second year fellows and the junior faculty members committed to learn and perform interventional nephrology procedures.
3) Teaching and training of outside nephrologists in the area of interventional nephrology.
4) Teaching and hands-on demonstration at the national scientific meetings to teach the
nephrologists the preliminary and basic techniques of interventional nephrology. I reach regularly at the American Society of Nephrology and National Kidney Foundation annual meetings.
5) Developed a 2-day demonstration course on peritoneoscopic insertion of peritoneal dialysis
catheter insertion. The course offers an opportunity for nephrology fellows, faculty and private nephrologists to visit the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine from around the United States and spend two days in an intensive course providing a series of lectures on this topic. To date, 15 nephrologists, including renal fellows from other nephrology programs, have visited our center.
6) Teaching and training nephrology nurses and developing their skills in the area of
7) Developed a full scale leading training program in endovascular procedures for dialysis
access at the University of Miami, Leonard Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL. The training is offered to nephrologists and nephrology fellows from other centers. Our own fellows are also enrolled in the program. This program provides hand-on training in procedures including percutaneous balloon angioplasty, intravascular stent insertion, intravascular coil placement, thrombectomy procedures for arteriovenous dialysis access. Vascular mapping using angiography and ultrasound are also taught. In addition, to technical skills didactic session cover the entire area of dialysis vascular access.
8) Teaching residents and medical students on medical team. 9) Interactive teaching sessions with fellows and helping them with scholarly activities.
30. Thesis and Dissertation Advising/Post-doctoral student supervision: NA
SERVICE 31. University Committee and Administrative Responsibilities:
1) Medical Director; Interventional Nephrology: 2001-Present. 2) Medical Review Committee. University of Miami Hospital. University of Miami Miller
3) Serve on the admission committee for admission to medical school (April, 2005 to 2006)
Committee Member: End Stage Renal Disease Medical Review Board. Florida End Stage Renal Disease Network (Network 7). Voluntary work: Teaching physiology of the transport of electrolytes and water across renal tubules and counter-current mechanism to high school students during their biology class at Coral Reef High School, Miami, FL.
