Basic Cooking Guide
• Microwave ovens differ in size - adjust the recipe and cooking periods accordingly.
• Time of recipes is based on 1000w microwave oven. Adjust time of recipe according
to microwave size. For a 600w microwave add 4 minutes of given cooking time.
1 Cup rice, 2 cups water and 1tsp salt. Place in oven at 180oC for 1 hour or microwave for 20-30 minutes and allow to stand for 10 minutes.
Pasta & Wheat:
Cover 250-500ml pasta with hot tap water. Add a dash of cooking oil and salt. Microwave for 10 minutes, allow to stand for 10 minutes. Drain.
Mix 1 cup oats with 2½ cups water and salt to taste. Microwave for 4 minutes, stirring after 2 minutes. Add butter/margarine and serve.
Mealie Pap:
1 part maize meal, 3 parts hot tap water and salt.
1 part maize meal, 1 part hot tap water and salt.
Oven: Pre-cook dry maize meal and salt in microwave for 30-60 seconds. Add water, stir well. Cook in oven at 180ºC for 45minutes. Stir and serve.
Microwave option: Pre-cook dry maize meal and salt in microwave for 30- 60 seconds. Add water, stir well. Microwave covered for 3 minutes. Stir and microwave for another 3 minute. Leave aside for 3 minutes. Serve.
Mealies:
Place mealies in Medium Oval Roaster. Microwave covered for 4 minutes per mealie. Brush with butter and season to taste.
Place cubes of 4 large potatoes in Roaster. Add salt, pepper and butter/margarine to taste. Bake at 180oC for 1 hour or microwave for 15 minutes. Allow to cool slightly, mash. Add milk or cream and 5ml baking powder. Microwave for 3 minutes. Serve.
Potato Chips:
Rinse chips in a weak solution of vinegar/lemon water. Dry chips on paper towel. Place into a plastic bag. Add 1tbsp cooking oil, shake to cover chips with oil. Empty bag into Roaster bowl. Microwave covered for 9 minutes. Allow to stand for 3 minutes. If you prefer your chips crispy bake (after cooking in microwave) uncovered in oven for 30 minutes or until crisp.
Sweet Potato:
Add 30 ml brown sugar and margarine to 500g sliced sweet potatoes. Bake for 30 minutes at 180oC or microwave for 15 minutes.
Beetroot:
Rinse 5 medium beetroots, place in Roaster, no extra water needed. Bake in oven at 180oC for 1¼ hours or microwave for 8_10 minutes at 75% power. Beetroot remains sweet with no mess!
Pumpkin:
Microwave diced pumpkin for 15 minutes. Add sugar and butter/margarine to taste.
Butternut:
Cut butternut in half. Place with skin and pips in bowl. Without adding water, microwave covered for 7-10 minutes. Remove pips and peel. Cube and microwave for 5 minutes. Flavour to taste.
Gemsquash:
Halve gemsquash and remove pips. Sprinkle with sugar or salt, add a dash margarine and 50 ml water. Bake at 180oC for 30 minutes or microwave for 3 minutes each.
Carrots:
Bake 500g carrots with sugar, margarine and a little water for 30 minutes at 180ºC or microwave for 15 minutes.
Cauliflower:
Cover raw cauliflower with white sauce and grated cheese. Bake at 180oC for 1 hour.
Add sugar and butter/margarine to taste microwave for15 minutes.
Fry chopped onion in frying pan on stove till golden brown. Add salt, curry and other spices. Stir in ½ cup smooth apricot jam. Place meat (beef, mutton, chicken, mince) in Roaster. Place potatoes and/or mixed vegetables on top of meat. Pour curry jam mixture over. Cover and bake at either 180oC for 1½ hours or, preferably at 140oC for 2-3 hours.
All meat can be done without extra water, oil or fat. Leg / Roast:
Bake 2,5kg meat for 90 minutes at 180oC or until done.
Bake 6 portions at 180oC for 40 minutes or microwave for 25 minutes.
Bake wors for 60 minutes at 180oC or microwave for 15-20 minutes.
Cooking time depends on how you like your meat done:
Rare: Microwave 450g 12-14 minutes Medium: Microwave 450g 15-17 minutes Well done: Microwave 450g 18- 20 minutes Microwave first 5 minutes of cooking time at 70% and then on 50% for remainder of time.
Chicken (Whole):
Bake 1,5kg for 60-90 minutes at 180oC. Microwave option: 10-12 minutes per 450g. First 5 minutes of cooking time at 70% and then on 50% for remainder of time.
Chicken (Portions):
Bake 6 portions for 45-60 minutes at180oC. Microwave option: 10-12 minutes per 450g. First 5 minutes of cooking time at 70% and then on 50% for remainder of time.
