Retirement Open House for innovative CMH Physician,
Dr. James Gowing

Cambridge, Ontario – Dr. James Gowing is retiring today after 46 years as a
hematologist, oncologist and researcher. During his tenure at Cambridge Memorial
Hospital (CMH), he made major contributions to cancer care and the medical community.
“Many people identify him with the Medical Day Clinic at Cambridge Memorial Hospital
(CMH), where he treated the majority of his patients. His contributions to CMH have
changed the way cancer patients are treated in the region and for that we are grateful,”
says Patrick Gaskin, President and CEO.
Born and raised in Preston, Dr. Gowing always felt a strong connection to the community.
It is only natural that he made such an impact to many here in Cambridge. Having treated
over 25,000 patients for cancer and blood diseases, rare diseases have always held a
fascination with Dr. Gowing. He has diagnosed over 20 rare cases during his career,
including the famous ‘Viagra Kid,’ Wesley Price. Price’s pulmonary arterial hypertension
was treated with Viagra. On Dr. Gowing’s instructions: “Wesley was the first person
whose symptoms were treated with this drug in North America and second in the world.”
Although he will let his license expire on June 1, 2013, Dr. Gowing will continue to write
articles, research rare diseases and teach after his retirement. “It is always important that
we ask the right questions when it comes to diagnosing patients. The answer is always
changing and evolving. We just have to find the truth in what is out there now, and know
this will eventually change as new discoveries are made,” says Dr. Gowing.
Media and the public are invited to attend an open house, celebrating Dr. Gowing’s many
years of service to CMH and the community.
