D135 Bertold Halpern Research Papers

Berthold Halpern (1923-1980) was foundation Professor of Chemistry at the University of Wollongong from 1970 until his death on 15 November 1980. Professor Halpern earned a Bachelor of Science with first class honours from the University of Sydney in 1950. He gained his Doctorate of Philosophy from Imperial College London where he worked with Nobel-laureate Professor Sir Derek Barton. Professor Halpern's working life was a mixture of industry, research and teaching. He worked for Monsanto Chemicals in Australia and for Syntex in Mexico. During his term at Stanford University in America, Professor Halpern worked on samples brought back by the lunar and Mars expeditions. Professor Halpern's special area of research was genetic disorders of metabolism. He was made a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Science in 1978.
