She mentioned that the General Education matrix can be used for both the K-6 and Middle Grades programs. Drs. Long and Teets attended the TAILACTE meeting at Johnson Bible College. Dr. Long commented that the meeting went well, but that all who attended were concerned about the TVAAS scores.
Dr. Teets, along with other area college representatives, sat on a panel at Whittle Springs Middle School to encourage middle school students to attend college. At the present time, the major way that progress is tracked through the programs is through grades, test scores, interviews, and the Professional Development Plan, which contains artifacts that document student progress through their courses. In order to improve the coherency of the program, and to facilitate student understanding of the ongoing nature of the Professional Development Plan process, Dr. Milligan and Mrs. Arrington did a presentation of the Curriculum Mapping Project that was re-scheduled from the December workshop. Dr. Milligan reminded faculty of what had been done previously. The faculty discussed the courses that are included at each transition stage for each program. Building on the TN Framework for Evaluation and Professional Growth, a set of performance indicators were identified for assessment at Stages 1 and 2 in the Teacher Education Program process. Stage 3 is assessed currently through the domains and indicators of the TN Framework. The relationship of the framework domains and indicators to the Tennessee State standards was discussed. Dr. Milligan identified several tasks that should be completed in order to improve the overall quality of the assessment of knowledge/skills at each level. It was suggested that for knowledge and skill statements and performance indicators that candidates function at a variety of levels as they progress through the program: 1. Awareness, 2. Exploration, 3. Developing and 4. Implementation or Application. Faculty were asked to review the performance indicators and the state standards to identify the key assessments that might be attached to each performance indicator. Courses in which these key assessments might be assigned should also be identified, as well as the level of performance expected from students in that course (for example, awareness). Although faculty certainly are encouraged to discuss the issues among themselves, a person was identified to serve as the primary reporter for each licensure area or groups of programs. Mrs. Arrington is to check K-6, Mrs. Hawkins, Middle Grades, Dr. Long and Dr. Hypes, Special Education, Dr. Taylor will review the secondary areas, and Dr. Brock and Dr. Hinson, TESL. Dr. Milligan will oversee the process and also check on K-12 areas. Those in advanced programs (Dr. Walker, Ed Leadership; Mrs. Hawkins, Reading Specialist; Sharon Teets, MED C&I) should review their own programs to clarify the relevant standards/assessments that comprise a developmental progression from the beginning of the program through completion. Dr. Teets also asked faculty to review each course that is taught to identify the one or two major assessments that are always completed in that particular course. These assessments form the artifacts that are included in student Professional Development Plans. The goal is to improve the overall quality of those artifacts/assessments. The work on the Curriculum Mapping project will continue on February 28, the next faculty meeting. Faculty should come prepared to discuss their findings. Minutes respectfully submitted from Mrs. Hodge.
