STUDENT ATHLETES TO REPRESENT SOUTH WEST

Eight Yeovil College students have been selected to represent the South West team in four different
sporting disciplines at this year’s British Colleges National Championships. Sixteen year old Yasmin Chick of Beaminster has been selected for Swimming, while Amy Reddaway (18) of West Coker has joined the Badminton team. Two students, Tom Austin (18) of Weymouth and Amy Reakes (17) of Shepton Mallet, were selected for Cross Country. Chloe Rice (18) of Gillingham, Maddie Barber (17) of Over Stratton, Courtney Bishop (17) of Yeovil and Shantell Hearn (19) of Bruton were asked to join the South West Colleges Ladies’ Rugby team. An additional student was also chosen as reserve should any of the selected Rugby players be unable to compete. Chloe Brown (17) of Gillingham was also selected, but unfortunately had to pull out due to injury. Not only was Amy Reddaway (18) of West Coker selected to represent the South West in Badminton, she was also chosen to captain the whole South West Women’s team. The Sport & Exercise Science student said “I feel very proud and privileged to be chosen. It’s great being part of a larger, regional team and spending time with everyone. It’s nice to play with different people and get the opportunity to challenge myself with different styles of play and techniques. I’ve been playing Badminton since I was 10 years old. My mum plays, so she took me to the local junior club and it just started from there. I also got selected for the South West team last year and got to compete in a lot of tournaments all over the country and abroad. Yeovil College is very, very supportive and offers so many opportunities sports-wise. As well as being in the Badminton Academy, I’m also play Rugby and Football for enrichment. My course is also very good. It’s taught me so much background knowledge and so many skills which will be useful later, at university and in life generally.” Yeovil College Sports Co-Ordinator Kath Purnell said “It’s always a very proud moment for the coaches and the College when we have students qualify to compete at a national level. It’s a real pinnacle of the year. The students work incredibly hard to reach a very high standard and deserve to get the opportunity to play on behalf of their region. We’re especially proud of Amy’s selection as captain of the whole women’s team, leading all the South West female competitors across disciplines. The South West team are the current holders of the Wilkinson Sword, presented to the team which wins the most points during the tournament. As such, she will be carrying the sword during the opening ceremony later this month. It will be an incredibly proud moment for us all. Let’s hope the team can defend their crown this The South West team will be competing in the British Colleges Sports Championships in Bath from Friday 22 March to Sunday 24 March 2013. The event will see over 2000 students from colleges all over For more information on Sport at Yeovil College, including enrichment and facilities open to the public,
